WORD FACTORY PRESENTS:

Short Story Course 2018

On Beginnings & Endings with Tessa Hadley

In the second of our short story workshops, one of the UK’s most renowned short story writers and novelists will help you explore the essentials of understanding beginnings and endings in your work.

We will think about how to find a way into the beginning of a short story - and to find a way out at the end of it. We'll look at some beginings and endings of the great short story writers, discus how they're doing and what works. The story itself - the core of the story, what happened - is what comes first.

Please come with the nugget of an idea for a short story. No more than a fragment: something found, or something read in a newspaper, or somethign from the famly pst,or some little dreamed-up scene that won't leave you alone. You don't have to know how to run this fragment into a story - that's what the workshop is for. And if you can't think of one, Tessa will have a few fragements spare to inspire you.

In small groups and then in the whole class, we'll discuss these, trying to find the right front door, the right first paragraph, which will open up into each fragment of story-material. And then - much harder - we'll try to find our way out again, imagine ending the story in the right place, with the right words - which are always 'hiding in plain sight'.

Tessa Hadley is a regular contributor to the New Yorker and a professor at Bath Spa University.

Class size limited to 25 places.
